What is Gynaecomastia | London & Essex?

Gynaecomastia is the benign enlargement of breast tissue in males, often affecting both sides of the chest. It is important to distinguish this from excess chest fat (known as pseudogynecomastia), which is due to weight gain.

In true gynaecomastia, the glandular tissue beneath the nipple becomes firm, rubbery, and sometimes tender. This condition is not dangerous but can cause considerable emotional distress and body-image concerns.

What Causes Gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia is caused by an imbalance between the hormones oestrogen and testosterone. Several underlying factors can contribute to this hormonal shift, including:

  • Puberty – hormonal changes can trigger temporary breast tissue growth.

  • Aging – hormone levels naturally fluctuate with age.

  • Medications – such as anti-androgens, antidepressants, or certain heart and anti-ulcer drugs.

  • Substance Use – alcohol, anabolic steroids, cannabis, and amphetamines.

  • Medical Conditions – including liver or kidney disease, thyroid disorders, and certain tumours.

Identifying the root cause is a key part of your consultation with Professor Miranda, to ensure long-term success and prevent recurrence.

How To Tell If You Have Gynaecomastia?

Gynaecomastia presents as firm glandular tissue directly beneath the nipple, often symmetrical and sometimes tender to touch. Chest fat, on the other hand, is softer and more diffusely spread and does not typically cause discomfort.

Professor Miranda conducts a detailed physical assessment and, if necessary, imaging (e.g., ultrasound) to confirm the diagnosis and develop a personalised treatment plan.

Is Gynaecomastia Surgery Permanent and Effective?

Yes! Male breast reduction surgery is the most reliable solution for true gynaecomastia, and is often permanent provided that you do not gain significant weight or have ongoing risk factors for it to develop again.

The procedure often includes:

  • Liposuction to remove excess fat.

  • Excision to remove dense glandular tissue.

  • Skin tightening or nipple reshaping, when necessary.

Professor Miranda’s surgical expertise ensures minimal scarring, natural contouring, and lasting results, provided underlying triggers are addressed.

Gynaecomastia Surgery Recovery Time

Recovery timelines vary slightly by case, but most patients can expect:

  • Light duties and daily activities: within 3–5 days

  • Compression garment usage for 6-12 weeks to reduce swelling and support healing.

  • Return to light gym and exercise: after 4–6 weeks.

Visible and positive results are seen immediately, with final contours settling over 3–6 months. Patients receive a comprehensive recovery and aftercare plan tailored to their needs.

Will Gynaecomastia Come Back After Surgery?

Gynaecomastia rarely returns after surgery, but recurrence is possible if:

  • Hormonal imbalances are left untreated.

  • Patients resume anabolic steroid use or problematic medications.

  • Significant weight gain alters chest appearance.

Professor Miranda addresses all potential risk factors during your consultation and offers long-term guidance to maintain results.
