What is a Ganglion | London & Essex?

Professor Ben Miranda performs ganglion hand surgery in London Harley Street & Essex (Chelmsford & Southend). A ganglion is a very common soft tissue lump that affects the hand. It is a cyst-like outpouching that usually arises for the lining of your joint (synovium), but it may also arise from the covering of your tendon (tendon sheath). There are a number of common sites where a gaglion may appear on your hand, such as on the back of your wrist, front of your wrist, at the finger tip joint (distal interphalangeal joint) that is also known as a 'mucus cyst', or from one of your flexor tendons.

What are the Treatment Options for a Ganglion in London & Essex?
Non-Surgical Treatment:
A ganglion may disappear on its own, although, most that arise from a joint will persist or grow with time. An initial option for treatment would be to attempt to remove the fluid from within it using a needle and syringe, however, this may be unsuccessful if the fluid is quite thick and mucus-like. Sometimes, steroid can also be injected into the ganglion after successfully removing the fluid, however, in all cases the recurrence rate is high.
Ganglion Surgery in London & Essex:
Ganglion surgery in London & Essex is performed via an incision that tends to be slightly larger than the ganglion itself, in order to be able to 'track' the stalk of the ganglion and remove it from its origin. Mucus cysts of the finger tip joint (distal interphalangeal joint), such as that shown in the picture above, have a tendency to invade the overlying skin and a local flap may need to be raised and advanced to cover the area that has been removed.
